Condition monitoring specialist firm, WearCheck, has brought their sister firm, Set Point Water Laboratories into the fold, including a brand new division to WearCheck’s scientific testing structure.
The water analysis firm is now built-in absolutely into WearCheck, and forms yet another area of experience along with WearCheck’s different companies, which include scientific used oil analysis, asset reliability care, transformer oil testing and lubricant-enabled reliability providers.
Set Point Water Laboratories is ISO 17025:2017-accredited, and checks water from any supply – starting from drinking water to manufacturing unit effluent, and every little thing in between – to find out the presence and levels of probably harmful substances.
Set Point Water Laboratories was established in Johannesburg in 1998 as a minerals laboratory, then known as Set Point Laboratories. The firm launched water testing in 2013 and expanded with the launch of a Cape Town water laboratory in 2019, attaining accreditation of the Cape Town Laboratory in 2020, and thereafter focusing only on water analysis.
Thelma Horsfield, basic manager of Set Point Water Labs, outlines their providers, ‘Our laboratory technicians choose the related exams for the water pattern depending on the wants of the customer. They identify what is mistaken with the water and advise clients on potential penalties of using / discarding such water.
‘Water analysis is conducted using numerous accredited techniques corresponding to; photometric, electrometric, colorimetric, gravimetric, ICP-OES, ICP MS and enzyme substrates. These methods acquire the absolute best ends in chemical and microbial analysis of effluent/wastewater, drinking water, processed water, surface water and groundwater.
Industrial operations
‘In the case of industrial operations needing to get rid of wastewater into a river system, the ocean and even merely down the drain, there are strict by-laws that have to be adhered to, outlining the “acceptable” levels of contaminants earlier than disposal, to prevent potential fines and even prosecution. Our water technicians decide the precise ranges of contaminants and advise on acceptable ranges for safe discarding.
‘Many of our mining prospects function boreholes, utilizing the water within the mining process. We often monitor the water high quality from the boreholes to check whether contaminants from the mining course of have leached into the water supply.
‘As an instance – cyanide is usually used in gold mining, the presence of this toxin should be continuously monitored. ที่วัดแรงดันน้ำ is often discovered in the ore with gold, and as uranium is radioactive, it may be very important monitor the degrees and examine whether it has leached into the water provide. This is even a difficulty on disused mines and mine dumps – many of our clients dwelling close to these come to us to test the standard of their consuming water. Chromium-6, a carcinogenic factor, is a by-product from chrome mines, so it may be very important know if people shall be ingesting water with high levels of this.
‘Health is a main cause for many of our prospects for consuming water safety, both non-public and in the restaurant commerce for making juices and coffees – they usually need to know the hardness of their municipal water as it affects their espresso machines.
‘In addition to the above, scope water can be utilized for dialysis. It is important to note the sufferers on dialysis have little to no kidney perform. Kidneys help compensate for the higher consumption of substances obtained from meals and drinks that would otherwise construct up in the body. Dialyzing with pure water prevents the exposure of substances/toxins that cannot be eradicated from the body. We are at present performing some water quality checks for a renal unit to make sure suitability for dialysis
‘Irrigation water high quality is a critical aspect of greenhouse crop production. Water with high alkalinity can affect vitamins uptake by the vegetation and trigger nutrient deficiency which compromises plant well being.
‘Borehole water testing is a popular item with customers who wish to know whether the water is safe to use on their garden, to fill the pool, to drink and use within the family. In Cape Town, many boreholes have high salt content, and, after testing the water, some customers need to dilute it with municipal water or put processes in place to remove a lot of the salts.
‘Through WearCheck, our water amenities present analytical services by way of an extensive community of operations in South Africa and internationally
‘And’, adds Horsfield, ‘as a results of the worldwide Covid pandemic, we added alcohol content material testing to our companies in addition to a newly introduced logistics resolution to enable easy movement of water and sanitizer samples.’
Previously, WearCheck was part of the larger Set Point group till the corporate was bought by current house owners Synerlytic in 2019, together with SetPoint Water Laboratories.
